Hi guys, I found on Evermotion.org this interesting tutorial.
On this site it's presented for furniture, but I think it can be useful for car too.

In max 8 (MR ofcoz, not vray), go to lights, roll down menu, select
"photometric", there, lights with that fancy square stuff :D

Make sure you have HSV exponent and color mapping with value of 1.7~2.0 this would reduce light intensity... keep changing the CMap value.
@Broken Bone... Max Photometric Light will Kill MR render speed unless you have patience ;)

After a little crash with my screen (no backlight at all) I've got a new one! so, I post the render as I said (made on last thursday) after a loooong looong render.... (2 hours)

this is how i do my studio set up but the problem you can see the grid on which the light is comeing from, which in my mind looks tacky....

I found this tutorial good for the material settings that it gives near the end. I've also used the lighting in a test image of a couch which worked nice maybe turn the lights down.

The thing I've noticed with tutorials is it leads most people into the tutorial writer's habits. They're good of course, but it's not always the right way to be done (most of the time). :clown:
