I'm currently working on this project - unfortunately, there aren't any decent blueprints on the internet so a lot of it is by eye. This is as far as I have got... Only two chamfered edges so far. But the surfaces are nice and clean.

I'm going to produce some really high quality images from this (If I can get the model looking good enough) of the car in great locations.

Feel free to comment, good and bad. As I say, I've just started and a lot is by eye.

Thanks

Tom

Quite a challenging project you've picked up :p
It is a shame there aren't any accurate BP's of the new Aston Martins..
I'll be watching how this turns out, good luck!

BTW Can't imagine what will the future Astons look like, i mean how can they keep designing more beautiful cars than they already are?

TTombo
20-08-07, 02:08 PM
Yeah, it's a bit of a headache at the moment...got a little distortion due to the bp inaccuracies.

Once I overcome that though fingers crossed :D

Oh, and thanks for the link o.b. nice. Aston Martin really have got something special going in terms of design.

awesome man, one of mmy favourite cars - I think theres some really good pics of the side on seriouswheels.com, there might be front OR you could go and buy a flight from Stansted, and they have this thing for winning a supercar, and theres a V8 Vantage and an F430 there for pics, though they probs changed the cars by now lol

The design is outstanding...i was blown away when i was standing next to it :)

Anyway, good luck with the project.

Looking forward to see some progress.

Nice model so far, really good choice of car. I can't wait to see more !

About modeling with/without blueprints :

I wonder if you're not using any one or if you're using wrong ones and you handle their inaccuracy. I worked with wrong ones for my DB9 (they can be seen on my site, the rear is really too long) and it's far easier to deal with wrong blueprints than working without.

When working without blueprints, you have to make sure very soon during modeling than the global space utilisation is right. And that's pretty difficult because from basic information (such as car width, car length, car height, track width, wheelbase) to a nice body there's a long way to go. For some rare case (external chassis, such as an Ariel Atom II), it's simple, but that's the exception.

Btw, there's a nice looking print at smcars : http://www.smcars.net/forums/aston-martin/17599-aston-martin-v8-vantage-2006-a.html

Tonn
20-08-07, 05:49 PM
I would suggest useing V8 Volante blueprints, I used those, although mine are smaller than 512x512 they are accurate. The prints that tom120934 posted are quite inaccurate.

They side grille look a bit too wobbly, it should look a bit more defined, same with the waistline of the car. Model looks very nice otherwise, judging by your R8 this will be a real eyecandy when it`s finished.

/edit- these prints: http://www.smcars.net/forums/aston-martin/17327-aston-martin-v8-vantage-volante-2006-a.html

tom120934

The prints that tom120934 posted are quite inaccurate.

That's what I thought. Can you please point out any inaccuracy you see ? I think it will be useful to TTombo and anyone wanting to model this car.

About the print you posted, they clearly came from a patent application. I hope the full size ones will be available shortly. GooglePatents didn't give me them.

Tonn
20-08-07, 06:53 PM
@tom120934 - The whole thing is oddly proportioned and off :p . It looks as if it was traced after some pictures but in that case there`s no appearant effort to fix the perspective. If you look at the front and rear print you can clearly see that both halves are not symmetrical. IMHO it would be best to not use that print in any way because it`s worse to use bps made of pics than it is to use the pics themselves (easier to compensate for perspective).
The prints that I posted came from some Ford publication if I remember correctly. They are a quite old so I wouldn`t have high hopes for a new release.. then again you never know.

tom120934
20-08-07, 09:43 PM
I agree with you but using only the side view may be of interest. There's clearly a perspective problem with the front and rear views, but as usual, these are the views which most suffer of that kind problem.

About the prints you posted : here's a bigger version (not high res however and only side and top views) : http://www.leblogauto.com/2005/08/aston_martin_v8.html

you're welcome...
you could work to the mesh flow, a little more:)

Tonn
22-08-07, 06:33 PM
The nose has to be a bit pointier, the whole thing seems a tad too wide, the rear wheelarchs doesn`t point out that far, the bottom of the rear bumper should curve inwards a bit more.. that`s how it seems to me atleast. I can`t see anything wrong with the mesh flow though, density is another topic but don`t fix it if it isn`t broken.

Aljoscha.Niko
22-08-07, 07:05 PM
Yep, looks already good, but as those before mentioned, the marked errors are disturbing. I saw your R8, it looked great! :)

tom120934
22-08-07, 07:39 PM
The mesh is a bit dense, but it looks rather clean. Keep going this way, just save some polys if you can !

About blueprints, I get this one back from my harddrive : the same source than the DB9 one I used. Maybe it's off like the DB9 one.

TTombo
28-08-07, 01:38 PM
Ok, some progress, although I've not had too much time on my hands :S

A lot of the original errors were due to the fact that I was using the AMV8 concept car blueprints as reference.

edit: The forum attachment system has probs - I will attach images when fixed.

tom120934
17-09-07, 08:52 PM
If you're using a bumpmap for the interior, you may consider add the border of the DVD / GPS screen on top.

Btw, it's really great looking when thinking how lowpoly the interior is. Can we see a render from another point of view ? :D

TTombo
17-09-07, 08:56 PM
Lol, I'll sort out those upside down vents. :D

I'm not going to put the satnav in, just because I prefer it without visually. (I would add it as on option if I was buying the car of course ;/)

Aljoscha.Niko
17-09-07, 09:39 PM
Yes, I'm creating my interiour with a method like this one, too. While I try to model as detailed as it stay quick - all the extreme details like knobs or so, these are textures... :) Great work!

rodderworld
17-09-07, 10:00 PM
if you're not going to render the interior, i'ld say that method has to be the way to go. i hadn't thought of it before but it makes a lot of sense.

regards,

TTombo
17-09-07, 10:13 PM
There is a lot of photoshop work involved to get it looking good though. For example, the centre console is a psd with 5 different layers. (bump, diffuse, specular, reflection mask and gloss). To get the highlights and shadows out of the diffuse texture it took a lot of burning and dodging.

TTombo
17-09-07, 10:49 PM
Other angle and vent up the right way.

micemincer
17-09-07, 10:59 PM
cool idea - for shot not from inside or animation this should do perfectly :]

E: in most cases visitor won't even see that this is a bitmap. And messing with photos simply gives photo realistic results - without tearing hears out of your head ;)

About the DVD/GPS screen, you choose your move. I just didn't know it was optionnal.

The render looks great from the others PoV. I wondered about air cooling controls, I didn't notice you've modeled that tiny cylinders. But obviously, you did ;) I agree with comments above : for a render outside the car, your interior will be perfect enough.

Your carpet looks great, except the fact that the texture don't tile is ugly. You may consider correct it with any tiling filter; I think all image manipulation software include one : www.gimp.org have a good one.

Keep us updated.

Thanks for the nice comments. It is turning out cooler than I thought. Done the steering wheel and changed the lcd colour as per 07 model year. The dash is higher and longer than needed at the moment, so I can trim it perfectly to the car. I think the wheel needs to be a little smaller.

TTombo
08-10-07, 06:33 PM
Yes, I did them separately. Due to the fact that I don't have blueprints basically. You can see on the renders of the interior alone, I extended the upper dash to a square shape. This was so It could be cut to fit the car. With the doors it was a question of moving a few vertices. The headliner was derived from the body-shell.

Not the most accurate way, but then, the majority of this project is by eye so it didn't matter. Thanks for the kind comments rodderworld.

rodderworld
08-10-07, 08:49 PM
i was just curious how you did it. you're right that most blueprints don't have the interior but give yourself some more credit, most people would just use the body as a shape reference. clearly, you have a good eye for proportions. can't wait to see how you render this baby.

Had a bit of a Mental Ray prob with some of my materials, so I've updated them to Arch/Des ones.

Ah, I just changed all the materials to mental ray specific ones.

So the raytrace reflection map - changed it to a car Paint (mi) one.

Dave3D told me a little trick for getting the map to have an environment map.

And the soft reflections look great on the leather and don't take too long to render also.

Thanks - the lighting in those car renders is really simple. But the effect is great.

What I did was chuck in two MR area omni lights. One facing, one backlight.

You get nice shadows that look like Ambient Occlusion.

If you don't use mental ray, then you can do it with a normal max light.

It is raytraced Area I think.

Very nice work overall man. I'm not familiar with Aston Martin's so I can't say much on accuracy, but otherwise, it's superb. The only critic I have, is that brake discs are supposed to be incredibly smooth, so that bump you have on it shouldn't be there. I'm not talking about the straight lines, but the circular ones.

Keep it up mate...you actually inspired me to try and make an interior for my Ferrari Testarossa :)

Great work Tom, I think you should leave the bump map there for the grooves in the disc, No disc brake is ever smooth, they always get little grooves in them because of what the disc pad is made of, Check this photo out, you can see the disc had little grooves in it.

01-11-07, 05:42 PM
Ah That was smart thing you do by adding some texture for interior instead of going through headache on modeling them or yet, finding the correct type of material. I like them very much, they sure do look real . Keep working tho...

BTW, leave the groove there... maybe make or get a better groove texture or reduce bump spinner (If you use them)

Cyclonus

Tweaked the brake disc materials - I need to make the brushed texture more dense though.

Nice Materials all around. How did you go about making the broke Rotor/Disc material? I've tried the Photoshop spin filter method and hated the result, maybe I did something wrong or left something out. Your's is nice though. Nice choice of car, Even with the DBS out this is still the best looking.

THanks for all the great comment! Very helpful.

Viper
01-11-07, 11:21 PM
Something I just noticed, is that the front wheel arch is a bit oval, instead of circular. A quick search on google shows that it should be round. Also, not really sure if the wheels are the wrong size. Maybe they need to be a bit smaller, but not a lot.

TTombo
01-11-07, 11:37 PM
yeah, that's because the wheel is not high enough in the arch. Will look better when the gap between the tire and the arch is uniform.

TTombo

5mins in photoshop on that occasion.

flip the car an do a motion blur followed by a small gaussian blur. Then a layer mask and a gradient for the falloff.

TTombo
05-11-07, 07:18 PM
Yeah, I'm going to do a higher res of the tyre side wall texture.

I can't be bothered to make the tyre tread more dense - thinking of memory also :D but you're right it's probably 80% dense at the moment.

Done a subsurface material for the tyres (gloss laquer on top and flakes below)

Also, the side windows and all the window seals are done now. The lip above the grill was too curved before. Looks much more realistic now.

It look absolutely superb , mate.
I know it's not finished yet , but I just wanted to point out some things I noticed. I know you want to get this perfect.
I think the window pillars are slightly too wide. Its not obvious on the image below but if you google images for this car, and look at the yellow one that comes up first (I am sure you've seen it) it looks slightly different if you look closely.
The vertical parts of the grille need to be further forward? (this could be a difference in the model maybe) and it looks ever so slightly curvier at the outer part of the grille, just below the headlights.
This is all very subjective I know , just wanted to help.

TTombo

I am going to redo the air vents and dials when I get some time - the maps are just place holders atm.

Reflections - It is a Gi error on the roof that is out of camera shot I think. A photon hotspot along an edge.

Skipping between the interior and the back - the rear end needs a lot of work to get it accurate unfortunately, but it's getting there. Still lots of errors, but the shape of the spoiler is better now.
