Thought i'd just throw all my current vehicle wips into one thread too keep things tidy.
All models are to be normal mapped and havn't been optimized yet.
Nissan Silvia s14a - this is the hi res mesh for normal mapping. currently 212,748 tris.
Vauxhall Astra - too many US police cars around so i've gone for the old school british squadie car, currently 5380 tris.
Ford Transit T280 SWB - on hold until i get time to get more refs, requires lots of optimising, currently 8792 tris.
Renault Clio V6 - havn't decided whether i will normal map this yet or keep it old school, currently 1996 tris.
Please crit away on anything. I'll jump between models so updates when I get them.
Very nice models, I´m looking forward to seeing updates on the normal mapping.
If I have got it right normal mapping is done by adjusting the lowpoly mesh´s normals to the highpoly meshe`s normals to make the lowpoly mesh get the same smoothing/reflection as it`s highpoly counterpart. The thing I don`t get is how it works on "sharp" edges (edges that you would just separate as smoothing groups on lowpoly and bevel/chamfer on highpoly), does the highpoly object`s bevel also go on the lowpoly object`s normalmap, making it look smooth aswell? If possible (when the time comes) I would like to see some comparision pictures of your models with normalmap and just regular low poly.

Tonn: I had the same question as you, which is why i decided to find out :D
Cars don't generally use normal maps ingame, if the car needs lots of detail its just modelled, then theres the use of multiple LOD's.
I'm thinking what i'll do is make the s15a and transit mid - high poly, then make the clio low poly ( less then 10 - 15k tris ) and apply normal maps to all 3 models and see what the outcomes are.
I'll be sure to post wires and screengrabs when I get to that stage. :)

Been working solely on the Astra cop car, trying to get the modelling finished as quickly as possible. Not happy with the headlights at the minute. Will have to keep working at those. Not too worried about the wasted tris. They could easily be removed if necessary but i'll probably leave the mesh pretty much as is for now. Interior to come next. Need to decide whether to model the seams or experiment with a normal map, and whether I want it rigged ( ie. doors, bonnet, boot etc ), undercarriage and engine.
Currently 13,224 tris.

I don't say they suck, I only say that for me you have really great lowpoly skills, f.e. I can't make lowpoly car, because i don't know how to make it looks good with few polies like you ;) keep working man

Ok, I finally got something done on this.
Added more detail to the interior and added some equipment. Should really add some more but can't find any decent refs, so, onto unwrapping... (yay!).
