I have question about low poly models(car).

If I have poly limit 1500-2000. How much I should spend for exterior, if I need simple interior and very simple engine?!

And what about tris and polygons? Is that same?

polys are different to tris. There are 2 tris to a 4 sided poly.
To check the polycount in max, open the ' Polygon Counter ' tool from the Utilities panel and select ' Count Triangles '.
For 2000 tri id aim at an interior of 300 tris, engine 200 tris, wheels 500 tris ( 125 per wheel ) and the rest ( 1000 ) on exterior. It depends on the type of game it would be aimed at.

I've heard lots of people use polys/tris interchangeably for years in games. 99.9% of the time if they told you 1500-2000polys they mean 1500-2000 tris...

For MAX9 and greater poly counter isn't in the base package...you can use statistics, but have to change the base settings. Its also picky about how you pass your selections up the modifier stack. Its too bad too cause poly counter was better. You can find the old version to use in MAX9, but I've had performance problems with it for some reason...

As for how many polys to spend...Teddy gives you a good base idea, but I usually make a really rough model for each of the major pieces. Make the tires instances, so you can drop polys off all of them quickly. Each tri there is worth 4. Get as many details about how the model will be used, and find all the places you can cheat and save polys.

heh, yea thats true. Here at Rockstar everyone just says polys....UnsteadyTeddy is right about its true definition though. Try being as specific as possible, because there have been instances at studios where someone said "I need this to be 4,000 polys", and the person models it to be 4,000 quads, even though the person that said they needed it to be 4,000 polys was talking about triangles....So, suffice to say, you end up halving the model because of a tiny mix up....
