Lately I've been spending most of my free time modeling a Porsche 962C. It will be part of a group c mod for grand prix 4. I aim for 20.000 polys (tris), that is without tyres, steering wheel and helmet.

Your mesh is very wobbly and messy, mostly due to the fact you have so many tris in the middle that are being wasted. I suggest you remove some of the tris and clean the mesh first before continueing, otherwise you will have to do it later and it will be 10x harder.
Whats your current polycount ?

You also have a lot of wasted tris down the sides and at the back of the canopy. You could easily remove over 500 - 1000 tris from this model with no visible loss of quality.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try my best loosing as many polys as you say and cleaning up the mesh. The polycount is about 2000 right now.

How should I handle the useless polys at the back end of the canopy? I could weld their vertices but that leaves me with alot of tris that might damage the smoothness.

It won`t damage the smoothenss.. at least it shouldn`t. However it will make a small zigzag in the reflections at the place where 2 edgerows merge into 1, on mesh in this resolution I would find it acceptable but it`s your model :)

That's what I meant ;-) I have done it many times before but the reflection got slightly distorted indeed. I guess it's better than having all these extra polys. I'll see what I can do about it.

Finally I've been able to work on this car again. I cleaned up the mesh but didn't cut too many polys. I really needed the roundness of the canopy to be smooth. The center line will eventually be removed.
I'm now in the process of cutting the vents and other gaps out of and in to the carbody. The car currently has about 5000 tris.

Erix,

First I must say awesome job. I am a Porsche freak and the 962 is my all time fave. I use to model in SCGT. Know I just paint for rFactor and the GTR games. I would like to offer my services as painter if and when you need them. I have painted just about every 962 that has ever raced. I am very familiar with the Le Mans and IMSA liveries and the teams themselves. You might say I'm an amatuer 962 historian. Anyway; if you need help with anything just email or pm me.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

Thanks Bandit!
I usually paint my cars myself and in this case some will be painted by one of the modgroup's teammembers. Thanks for the offer, I will remember it ;) Now, first I'll finish the model and mapping and then I'll discuss it with the rest of the team :)
