Serious question for all you pros: I've ALWAYS wanted to learn 3D modeling, and finally I just got right into it. I have been playing with Houdini Apprentice, and downloaded Blender and didnt like it, and most recently have been using up my 43 days on a C4D trial. Frankly, I am LOVING C4D! It has a great work flow, and produces some quality renders, no to mention a very well layed out interface. But the one I am MOST interested in trying is Modo, which is next on my list when my C4D trial runs out. Modo users, how do you like it? I've watched a ton of vids online and it looks extremely amazing in terms of interface. However, I also know that 3DSM is the main industry standard for a reason, especially with Vray for rendering. How can you argue with the images that the users on this site have created with that combo?
But seriously, how does Modo stack up in the rendering department compared to 3DSM + Vray? Opionions please? I really would like to get some direction, as I am very much interested in making this "hobby" into something that I can use for a carrer. Thanks in advance for the input!

i'm a really satisfied 3dmax user. That's a great software, i recommend you to try it.
Vray it's fast and common but i recommend you mental ray, i think it's more pro.
Also, you can try Maya, another great allinclusive software.
3dmax and maya are the standards in the industry so you must learn one of those two.
Modo isn't an allinclusive software, it started as a modeling one and developed different things , like rendering engine, over time. Good to have it known, but first you need to learn a software that you can rely on it at everything you need(from modeling to animation, dynimics, photorealist lighting and so on...)
There's much to be said but i won't go into details now...just take a look around on the softwares's features i told you... see some other users impressions and in the end, get into details and get decided.
Good luck in your career

Well.. as a petter says you should really try max or maya if you want to handle serious jobs with animation, dynamics, particles and so on. I`v been using max in the beginning but I switched to lightwave cause it was much interesting for me (even because of it`s non-like-windows-looking interface ) and it`s also has all the features you may need in 3D. But then modo appears on the scene. It is starts as a mix of the best features from maya, c4d and softimage, and was based on lightwave-like interface, but much more flexible.. not that word, it is flexible for 100% because there is non of UI elements which are can`t be customized or constructed from beginning. I haven`t used c4d but many who tried both of software are found them similar. And as for me it is the best modeling tools ever. I tried but can`t make the same one mesh in lw or in max or in softimage. modo is a speed modeling tool, it also has unique real-time sculpting, painting and preview abilities, and lots and lots of other small beautiful things.. I`m not using animation tools, but versions 3 and 4 are have them, and there is 501 are coming out soon which will have advanced animation features, and faster rendering engine (which is also extremely flexible, accurate, realistic and really fast).
Anyhow, my meshes are animating and rendering in max, v-ray\mental ray, maya, etc. I`m saving lot of time on modeling process, and it is very easy to convert fast and accurate to any other file format.
Good luck man, godspeed

im currently new to 3D designing....but i have already designed a spark plug in 3d s
and it was hard and took me awhile
but i do have experience from Acad and Solid W
Well, my trial of C4D runs out in a few days, so I am planning on picking up the Modo trial next, which I am terribly excited about :P
I know Max might be the industry standard, and I am definitely excited about thrying it as well, but there is something about the focus of Modo that just clicks with me. Time and trials will tell, but since I am planning on picking up a new computer here soon, say in the next month or so, I should know which piece of software I want to pick up to use on the new machine.
As for Modo 501...I thought the newest version was 401, which just came out? When are they going to release 501?
You think I is possible to import, not only models and animation from the first Deus Ex, and talk logistics and import the entire menu screen deal is the first game. Basically I just want to make a fantasy sequel to Deus Ex is the place I used all the older models. Treatment in 3D Studio Max is a simple desire to use speed, my girlfriend has a static part of the capacity building of these maps.
Does anyone use Autodesk Alias AUtomotive? I have been learning Alias and Maya for some time now but considering the popularity of 3DSMax I am considering giving it a try.
