Hey guys, I was just wondering what type of jobs would be availible to car modelers, if any. Or maybe some of the pros can tell what kind of direction would be taken for this route. Originally i a product modeler, its not to hard to find product modeling jobs, but ive never seen one for any kind of autos. I was just hoping maybe to get some kind of insight to this. thanks for any help
are we speaking about pure car MODELLING ? Then it´s going to be a tough road ahead. If we´re speaking about car visualisation then chances are a lot better
hard question...
for sure, only few places for many peoples...
maybe the game industry is the best area for a "car modeler". they always need new models, with more details, polys etc...
and over your question Billabong, maybe a job forum, specialized in car related stuff, would be cool here in cg cars, even if i dont know if there s enought job opportunities for car stuff in this little 3d world.
yeah i though that this field may be a very hard one to get inot, and im sure you would probably need to be willing to move to Detroit(j/k). the real reason i was asking this question is, I wanted to do something more than product modeling, dont get me wrong, ive made a nice living from it so far, but I would like to broaden the horizon a little without getting into the gameworld. and seeing how i have really enjoyed modeling my first car in max, I thought i would try to get a little bit of info on it, thanks guys
When you consider just how many ppl can model cars well, you need to be able to model many times better than nearly all of them to make a living off it.
If your serious about it then you should learn to model in POLY aswell as NURBS.
i've been thinking a bit since my first post. there really are limited opportunities for someone who only does cars. a little bit of diversity in a portfolio goes a long way. it's not to say there's no chance but it makes life harder.
Not only modeling skills, but having skills in rendering, texturing, composite is key ingredient to get a job.
Technically, the easy way to get freelance job is to have ppl you know that knows your skills in field.
I do get free lance job, technically, I was lucky... my friend and I knew eachother from college. After he graduate from college he got a job as web design for companies. A Lot of times he always asks me to model some thing for him so he could add some picture on websites. and I get paid real good. unfortunately most of times they are not cars... technically what I am trying to say.... if you also have skills in archeit, characters, nature, and etc... beside cars its more likely you ll get free lance job. if you want to do cars, it'd be best to take course at college and study NURBS, because today most car industries relies on nurbs more than polymodeling.
yeah, ill probably just stick with my product modeling for awhile anyways, Ive got some good clients, with some good referrals, plus its gonna take me forever to get as good as I need to in car modeling to hope to ever do anything with it. I was just curious also if anyone here actually does this for a living. thanks guys for all the replys, they were very helpful
Diversify is the best way Ive been able to do what I have.
Landscape / Architecture
Mechanical
Intellegent Transportation Systems
Communications
Automotive body design (Freelance)
I'm pushing more into the Architectural area of transportation field.
but if my latest thing is at Sema, I hope to see more come from that. Crosses my Fingers.
I also would like to get back to doing products, I rather like having parts at my desk that were only on paper not long ago. The the assembly of those parts is fun. I don't think a bus shelter or parking garage would fit there. lol
Maybe we need to get into model making.
good luck with Sema, and yes product modeling is a good field to get into,I have no complaints when it comes to pay wise for modeling products plus once i learn a lot more about max, ill be able to get more product modeling jobs
if you want to get into the automotive industry working alongside designers the most widely used modelling software in design studios around the world is alias...
you have to have a very good understanding of 3d form and the design process... and be prepared to constantly be rebuild and refineing cars all day everyday....
with many positions for talented alias modellers around the world they are like gold dust....
i have been using alias for about 10 years now and would be happy to answer any questions
by the way i think there is some fantastic work on this site, well done to everyone...
