    3d modeling software

Hey, I am relatively new to the 3d modeling scene but I am looking to make some simple car models of one of my designs. The problem is that my computer is a 10.4 mac with only 256mb of RAM. Is there any software that my computer could handle? That I could get a trial version of?

I don't know anything about Mac, and is very much oppose to it. But seem like your memory is too low. Most 3dApplications recommend more than 512mb to run.

Oh mates.... It seems that you are talking really much shit about it. I think that everyone of you does not know much about mac, true?
Why are you then writing buy a new pc? Worthless.....
So at first which kind of mac do you have? Maybe only a little bit more ram is a good choice. Tell us something more and also which application do you want to use.
A new pc isn`t the best choice everytime. Mac`s are working on a other way than simple windows pc`s. So mates, try to talk useful stuff instead of such unqualificated shit that he needs to buy a new pc....

I just want a program to model a car for rendering, but it sounds like my computer can't handle anything (its the first white Mac, little ball and floating screen)

I started rendering on an Amiga with 2mb ram and a 7 MHZ processor. So, you only need a PC if you want to run the most up-to-date software,

I am sure you will find something to try on your Mac.

Look for some old demo versions of C4D ?

Blender is your best bet. It's decient software and it's free. It's plenty powerful to model cars. Rendering lacks a little but YAFRAY is decient, and its also free.

Steve [Jobs] is that you again, lol. I guess it would make more sense to use a MAC after all their more 3d apps. Their cheaper than PCs and they are faster than PCs. All the best computer games on out on the MAC.

It's pretty disappointing to read so many naive and immature replies to what is a serious enquiry. (But of course I'm a die hard Mac user and would never consider changing platforms.)

Dr. Phil, from your decription it sounds like you're using a G4 iMac, which by current standards is not the fastest machine around (but still fatser than some of the systems in use on this very forum).

This machine (with the addition of some more RAM) should run most of the applications you're probably considering. I've run Lightwave on a machine similar to this in the past with no problems.

You should start by looking through the 'Imaging and 3D' applications listed on Apple's web site for software you can install:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/imaging_3d/

Cinema 4D, Blender, Lightwave, Modo and Maya are some of your options. (You'll need to check system requirements beforehand of course.)

yep... I agree... the Mac attacks are just stupid...

seriously... I could battle back and forth on subject Mac vs. PC until the cows come home but its silly really. I am not even going to toss out any satirical jokes or cracks like some about it... why... because we have all heard them before (most are inaccurate anyhow) and just because Joe Shmoe on the internet thinks his machine is best is not going to convince anyone to switch from something they are comfortable with.

Now regarding the original post... I think the RAM is probably going to be the biggest issue... 256 might not cut it and 512mb might be ok but considering how much resources the new OS's (not just macs either) use... I suggest at least a gig if possible to anyone doing work in graphics whether 2D or 3D.

Blender is nice because its free... though I hate the interface. I have just started working with Cinema4d R10 and can't say enough good things about it. Love that it even lets me drag and drop some things like textures and the addition of the body paint is very cool. It works on my 10.4.7 fine but I am running a G5 dual 2gig machine with 1.5gigs of Ram.

DAZ3D.com has Hexagon which looks like a nice modeling program. I tried a demo and was impressed by the ease of creating organic looking meshes but it did crash a couple of times and heard reports it was buggy. Carrara, also made by DAZ3D is supposed to be a great program for the Mac but never have tried that one.

I tried to check system requirements for Cinema4D but can't seem to find that info on their site... if you find program that interests you and don't see requirements... email the company or call them up before your purchase and they should be more than willing to help you out.

oh... just thought... Cinema4d and Hexagon offer demos... and maybe a few others listed might have demos too... worth maybe just downloading them and giving them a try to see if they work well on your machine as is

    All you Mac haters should watch this review of Windows Vista (by a New York Times columnist) before you start preaching to everybody how superior your PC's are;

(I tried to resist posting this but the Microsoft lovers really need to stop kidding themselves )
