Hey,
I tried that but it doesn't fix the issue.
But today I threw a light into the scene and it seems to have fixed the issue (but not permanently), when the lights go away the problem comes back, But even now in the renders it shows triangular poly's, see below:
How do i get rid of these? I think the cause is the way the shading settings have been set
You can try use standard material and set value 40-50 for specular level and delete light. But if you will apply a turbosmooth, black face will not be there anymore. It is not a fault.
The way I see it, its a bug in max, I hope once this car is done it never shows up again!
imo it's not bug....is it editable poly? does you apply any modifier on it?
There is no modifier on the mesh, I am convinced that it could be bug, because I tried deleting the 'bad' poly, and bridged the sides again, and it seemed to fix the poly, but I am not going to do it on all the polygons cos it doesn't show in the render when a smooth modifier is applied

My mesh is Editable poly,I tried converting it to mesh and then back to poly but no good
Anyway, since it doesn't show up in the render when a smooth is applied I guess I can stop worrying about it.
what max version do you use?
1st: customize -> preferences -> configure driver. make sure you use directx 9. if dx9 then uncheck "dispaly all triangle edges" and "use triangle strips"
2nd: viewport configuration and make sure "enable hardware shading" it's unchecked. but you might also want to use hardware shading if your video card supports that. If so, then select the maximum SM supported for your video card. SM2 or SM3.
it happened to me too but after these steps it came back to normal this occured when i just installed max2010. it was default on dx10.
Are you using Facetted Display settings for the Viewport ?

I gave it a try, but it didn't work.
Guess what, I finally found a way to escape from the shading issue, here's how,
1.I closed the current scene,
2.Reset Max
3.Then I Dragged the scene file i was working on from its folder into the new view port, it asked me If I wanted to open it or merge it, I selected merge and it merged the scene, You could also go to File > Merge and merge the scene.
Once merged the shading looked the way it was supposed to, Finally Fixed
I could have said the above in a short way, but If another user new to 3Ds Max faced the same problem, found this post, it would be helpful to him if it was a little detailed.
I thank all of you for your support
Best regards
