I mean, to make it look smooth under turbo smooth, not to apply it....just make sure the whole panel looks ok when smoothed and then cut it

under turbo smooth without applying it?

sorry for asking so many questions P2sta, I want to go about this with correct procedure, but every time I take a step seems I forgot something or overlooked something.

In maya you can use the tools "smooth" to add density to objects, "add divisions" to add as many loops in between existing loops as you need, or press 3 on the keyboard and it calculates all polys smoothly almost like a nurb (maintaining your base mesh the same)

I feel like I should have cut the panels a while back and now it is causing me all sorts of trouble

oh, I don't know maya at all, just in 3ds max, you add a modifier called turbosmooth and you can see how the mesh smooth after the smoothing procedure...but you can still work with the basic mesh...so my point is to make it look smooth and then cut all the necessary cuts hope you get what I mean

Ok gotcha! In my case I could do something like SvdM was saying using a copy mesh as reference.

going to jump back on it now.

    1) I think what P2sta is suggesting is that if you're happy with your un-cut mesh's smoothness now as it is, you can collapse / convert you mesh to a poly mesh again after you've applied a smoother setting of x1 / iterations = 1. Then you'll have a smoother, more detailed mesh that you can cut into - I think it's sometimes referred to as the anti-NURBS method. (Was I right in saying this P2sta, is this what you meant?).

    2) Or yes, you can see how the method I suggested works. I hope you also save incrementally in Maya so you can come back to your old work if the new plan doesn't work.

At some stage in the modeling process, though, you will probably do the above collapsing on a Smoother iteration = 1 in order to work on the finer details. The idea is to get the mesh as perfect as you can without doing this to it, so method 2 is good for this. If you feel that you are happy with your body's mesh and you need it to be more dense for you to add more detail, then go on to method 1.
