    I'm in this process right now just because I realized the same things that you mentioned. The mental ray is awesome and i hope to achieve a good result. When I have a decent render I will post it here.
    Talking about it, do you know a tutorial that teaches how to construct a virtual studio in maya? I want to learn how illuminate a scene without a hdr.

    Hi beacon1. I saw the link that you posted and it will help me a lot. In this weekend I'll pratice on this. I was looking your avatar's image and I saw that it has a very cool white highlights. I was wondering if you achieved that by creating illuminated planes that's reflecting in the car. I would like to know what shader that I should use on the planes to get that too. I tried a poly plan with surface shader in white color adding a ramp in transparency channel to get a hard edge in the start and a fade out to the end. And I made a parent to a spotlight too, but the effect is to weak in my test render. Thanks.

    Yes, you are right but i did it in max, in maya, yes, ramp shader fade out with your white setting to more than 1 some use 1.8 or 2. depends on how bright you want it to be. Try also HDRI lighting in maya. Its faster than using lights.I switched to max bcoz MR is faster in max for me.
