    Ferrari Concept

I think it's time I did things a bit more creatively, I'm getting bored of copying existing designs, so here we go.

I basically want to do a concept to fill Ferrari's mid-engined V12's (The Enzo is like what 9 years old?). I seen some nice lines from the Ferrari design challenge this year, that along with Ferrari's current design language, 458/ FF are my inspirations.

I will have some sketches ready soon, maybe. However for now I'm splining out a basic layout of the car. I'm going to be doing the whole frame and suspension, maybe start relating my CG work with my studies.

So I'm going to do a space frame design, with the cabin as a monocoque -quite a few companies are doing that, a full monocoque is expensive, since if you have a crash, you have to replace the entire car basically.

So here's some screen grabs, the V12 has a 90x80 bore/stroke and cylinders are 60 degrees from each other. As for suspension I'm going for full on back breaking ride level, so horizontally mounted dampers and shocks.

C&C as always, inner circle of the wheel are at the offset mark (where the rim connects to the suspension arm) too much, too little?

It looks interesting. But I think that you are not starting with the main point.
Imo if you start with the engine parts it will limit your creativity at the design time.
I would start with the basic shape and the idea of the project.
But it is just my opinion.
    Keep working

    Cheers guys,

@Qualt, that's a fair point, however I wanted proportions right on the car, because I can't freehand circles very well =p So I used the splines as guidelines for the sketches (although they still look crap), but this project is not so much about focusing on aesthetics, I want it to be functional, I mean I'm not going to start doing FEA on it - but since I'm an engineering student, I want to learn more about how you would go about designing a car and the purpose of the small details. It's just more fun this way

@EquiNOX, I hadn't even thought of that, not sure what to call it though, Ferrari have always used numbers for their cars, usually horsepower figures which I don't have. 6.1 litre displacement though - Rosso 6.1 or something maybe not as cheesy as that

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did some more spline work, but nothing interesting to see, and did a squick sketch on concept 1 which I don't like very much I can't help but think I've copied this design off something, can't think what though. I think the front end with a few adjustments might work, the side air intake I think is too generic, need to try something different. I need front intake for brake and radiator cooling - and I think that is the main purpose of that blade on the 458 Italia's front grill, it separates the air flow between brake and radiator.

On a side note, I was doing some research and it seems that using a flat underside for aero advantages, they have NACA ducts for cooling the gearbox/transmission. What I don't understand is that is the air flow directed through pipe work towards the gearbox or does it just flow into the whole engine sub-assembly and then out the grill at the back?

(Man these sketches look 10x worse from a scan)

this look good.... since you have side intake, maybe you could make combination of a retro-modern style of 80's ferrari such as Tesarossa, Mondial, 348, 328, and etc. Except for the popup headlights, use italia/ff similar style headlights instead. A dingle round mad looking LEDs tail lights with outake coming out. for aerodynamic purpose and blah.... I am sure that is what most car designer would do as sketching draft you know....

And you can always name it after the city or place in italy where it has been developed or something... Maybe make it a new generation for ferrari by proudly name it after yours such as 488 Panesar or something. Use your imagination!

I think this the lower part of rear bumper is too much 430ish Maybe i m not seeing it right, and is too early yet.
Good luck....This should be very interesting.

Looks similar to a Konigsegg in the 3/4 shot but nice overall.

Some of the edges look round - but that maybe as I was expecting something quite extreme.

That wasn't meant as a negative. I still like where you are going with this.

Nice to see a project from you, are you gonna finish this ?

anyhow, the sketches give a good idea, the front looks like a mix of koenigsegg and the italia, the side looks like a koenigsegg and the rear i don't know, just doesn't look ferrarisch. C'mon man i know you can do better

I think in general, especially the new ferrari's, have more playfull lines than your sketch. This looks far more like a koenisgegg or mclaren. Pagani and ferrari have playfull and unique shapes. You should integrate that.

Good luck with it and i'd love to see more

come on man, we need more concepts.

Sketches do look a little bit like familiar exotics.

Keep at it dude I want to see where ya go with it

    Thanks guys.

@EquiNox, yeah the old Ferrari's have a certain styling about them, I like it especially the flared arches. I found it easier to come up with ideas when ignoring intakes for engine/brakes etc. That said my sketches were still terrible =p I took your advice and hopefully some old school lines show through

@ravenzep - It wasn't supposed to be like F430 but I think it was my sketches, but I'll try at some more exotic diffuser.

@DaveCox - I know what you mean, I want to keep the car fairly curvy, maybe a few creases here and there, but I'm just trying how to make it look like a menacing machine.

@ Erik - haha, the Celica is nearly finished =p yeah you were right, I was thinking too much about technical features before having any design to work off of.

    @Wyatt and Dellaine - thanks,

    ------------------------------------------------

right the sketches were ok, got some ideas but I wasn't getting any progress, just better at drawing wheels

So I've decided to just go ahead and block out the mesh, so here goes. I like the shape on the old Ferrari's where the wheel arches are flared out, so I'm trying to go a little like that, however I'm not sure about the side skirt area, might need rounded or something. I also need to readjust the engine cover, the rear overhang is too much I think. As always let me know!

Well, as italian ferrari lover i'll make the front fender ends more curvly, myabe adding a bit of curvature on the side doors and keeping it sliding to the top of the car =) when i saw ur sketches i thought it was a Lotus LOL. Those two cylinders are makin me wondering, and i'm expecting great things from them =) dunno if they will be exhausts or taillights or what else, but they look interesting, like on the Fxx. For what u were arguing about, i think that the engine cover is a bit too long, i'll take a bit back the driver roof, just a couple of units, but it depends on the overall shape u are trying to achieve! =) anyway, i'll focus more on the shape, even cos nowadays this car could become easily an electric car! So no more need for engine bay, ecc ecc keep going!

    that's promising good =)
