First hello everybody ! I’m new at this forum.
I’m not angry because I was not selected. I was quite predictible to be honest. My design was pretty conventional. But when I look at the finalists I think it was a bad taste joke : a mad max car, a lego car, a rocket car, a car with wings, a shoe car (hey a new segment !),.... Most of the cars selected do not fulfill the Contest « Initial » Requirements. How many of them are simple or accesible ? When working in industrial design I think one of the worst things is the customer who does not know what he wants. It looks like Peugeot asked for some aspects and then they forgot them. Another point of view is: No Brief, No Design. Next time they can call the Competition "Peugeot Art Concours". |

je peu te dire que le premier concept est plus resemblant a un concept japonai que un concept de la part de peugeot but for your last sentences the real designer can make an ugly concept (scion for example) puis sinon regarde les resultats du concours tu veras qu'ils onrt des gouts de chiotes, enfin chacuns a son avis et ses gouts |

I think the cars were judged more on the design, as in, the 'peugeotness'. In Singapore, even though i might see less Peugeots, but when I see one from far I would know that it is one as most brands have a general design, as for peugeot, the headlights are longer and the front grille might be bigger. Another example would be Honda. The Accord Euro-R, Odyssey and Stream do look alike in terms of the headlights, and sometimes it is also known to be some kind of 'trademark'. But in this case I think the judges were really biased in their judging!

picking up from a few pages ago, concept cars are supposed to push/test public taste. It's hard to do because people are used to a set of conventional rules, it's hard to step out of that dramatically. But that's where the challenge of design is: it's making a meaningful differentiation that's also acceptable. It's very easy to be different from beauty by being ugly, it's much harder to do something that's different from the known beauty but more beautiful. I think in this regard, the selection failed. But you gotta hand it to the french for having humor and the money to play it out.
I have had my share of international car design competitions back when I was young and the dream was fresh (and won 6 times from all over, a gloat ). Usually you really expect the European circuit to pay more attention to reality and brand heritage. That's another reason I'm quite disappointed to see this went the Japanese way. |

I can't remeber the last time I saw so many sour grapes in one thread.
A lot of you on here sound like you're trying to design cars. Well I got news for you guys, your comments are making you sound like amateurs that think product design goes no more than skin deep. You need to look a little deeper. Sorry to be controversial (and I'm not trying to put anyone's back up... although inevitably my comments will) but there's way more to designing a car than a few slick surfaces. This exchange says that you're not car (or product) designers but just guys who like cars, do 3d, and have your favorite car in mind. And besides, I'm still waiting for one of you to post something that comes anywhere near the standard of the finalists. Now, if you want to see a really bad design competition head over to Ferrari and take a look at the crap they ended up with as finalists in their design comp. One final thought (and this is key if you're going to call yourself a designer): You don't have to like it for it to be good. And, just because you like it doesn't mean it's good. |
