Open Source Autocombat!
Hi everybody, I hope I'm aiming at the correct forum. I checked and it seems like this is the most appropriate one. Forgive me if I overlooked something.
Let me get straight to the point. I have several hobbies in life, one of which happens to be creating a video game. I'm a college student and I've been making this game with some other college students both near me and very, very far away. There's just a handful of us, but we're in the business of trying to make a solid auto combat game (like Interstate '76 and '82, if you remember). I'm looking for maybe one or two people with free time on their hands who would be willing AND interested in devoting time to a project such as ours. There's NO pay involved. Our game is open-source. For some of us, it's going to be great on a resume. For others (like me, studying Aerospace Engineering), it really does nothing for us professionally. But that's okay, because it's a hobby and it's something we're interested in. It would be preferable if you had experience with low-poly stuff, but not a must. Basically what you would be doing is accurately modeling cars that one might find in the south western United States...and perhaps a few gems from abroad. Eventually we're going to want to add people to the game, but that's a ways off. You don't need to be able to do 2D stuff, we have some 2D artists already. UV Mapping is a plus, not required. With that said, I guess the only other thing on my mind was that I was really frustrated tonight about our inability to find good people in this department and I did a google search and found these forums. It seemed like a good place to start. Perhaps if I'm in the wrong place, somebody can point me in the right direction. Thank you for taking the time to read my plea for help. Oops, I guess I should setup a board for that. I'll do that right now.
Check back and then I'll have a forum setup for anybody who's interested. |

Yeah, we're going to start with some muscle, but we also want ordinary cars -- things you would actually see in the south-west. But we're not going to limit ourselves, we are also interested in European and Asian cars as well. We basically want a well rounded choice of cars.
Right now we've got a generic 80's van (think Mr. T), an 80's Toyota pickup, and a couple of other things. But we basically need to start over with our car models because we decided that the engine we wrote can handle a lot more polys than we originally thought. |

Just make a NEW post in that forum. Only the sticky is locked because it gets messy when people start replying to that. But Yeah, you can reply here, too, if you want. I'm not picky. Thanks for the interest!

i have some questions:
1) How much experience is needed ? i started using MAX in the begining of 2007 2) What is a limit for polys on a single car ? 3) If you accept me to model a car for you, will my name apear in the "credits" section ?

1.) It's very hard to say how much experience is needed. It's not something that either I, or anybody else on the dev team, could really quantify. We're going to take a look at everybody who's interested and willing to work with us, and then I think we'll talk to everybody individually, and go from there. We're all still learning, so don't be afraid to apply!
2.) The poly limit is an issue we'll have to discuss in more detail with whoever comes on board, however, I will say that we've been having trouble deciding on a limit. Since we wrote our own engine, it's kind of hard to determine what the limit is. We started with some simple, low poly cars (around 3000), and we've decided that we can raise the limit significantly. What that limit is, we're still trying to figure out. 3.) Of course! But we're really interested in somebody who can do a bucket full of cars, not just one. |
