Buy 3D Cars Online

Can anyone recommend the best place online to buy 3D car models good enough to really use professionally?

Thanks

Tom

I've had to use a few company's models in projects.

Most of the models available are pretty low-level (no matter what they say) and would probably never get into the Advanced section on this Forum.

So, for architecture shots, or distance shots they will be fine - you cannot go in too close as you'll see the ripples and pinching. Most don't really chamfer - so nice smooth highlights on panel edges, while a lot rely on textures for seams and details (again you can't go in too close).

That's not knocking them, they do offer reasonable value when you need something quickly and at low cost.

Much, much better if you make one yourself if you have the time/ability.

What car model are you looking for exactly ?

Dave

3d02.com or turbosquid say that they have high end model. not sure, as said dave, if they re really good.
but seems correct anyway for some of the models.

True, I think some are actually quite good.

But there seems to be NO correlation between price and quality. (!?!)

I've seen things that you could knock up in 20 minutes asking for silly high prices.

Likewise, good stuff at fair prices.

It's a jungle out there ...

But I think most people on this Forum know good modelling. So look carefully at the meshes, and ask to see some if you are seriously thinking of buying (some even have a few examples to download).

Also bear in mind a lot of these models are supplied as mesh where the smoothing has been collapsed (dense mesh) so it's VERY difficult to tweak the mesh or work on it seriously.

But it really depends on what you want them for - maybe they are good enough for your requirements ?

Hi there,

although I dont have any personal experience using them, seems to me that digimation has a good model database, as well as the old despona base.

digimation stabs you some times before you realize their prices is what everyone should be charging... and this is something that always dragged me down.

Coming from the freelance list of 3d02, I had a hard time trying to find clients that would pay more than "99.99"USDs for a car...and they always had that on the tip of their tongues "Well, but the whole site is on this price range, why do you want to charge me over 1,000USDs for a single model".

I trully think that while these sites consider that u earn on volume not on single sell, I believe they had a bad impact on the way people look at our profession. Luckly, now I work only with concept modeling and on very specific cases when u cant find much more than images available.

But..getting back to the topic... Tom, I believe u can find some decent models on 3d02, for 1/10th of the price of Digimation, but the quality is never that good. I'm not trying to do an ad here, but look for featured artists on 3d02 cause they have the best models.

Well, thats it, I hope you can find something suitable for your needs.

All the best,
