I'm currently running the Vista RC1 build O/S and back on XP i used to use use DirectX as my graphics mode for max. On Vista -on DirectX- all viewports are white untill i move something or pan the view. I can use software or driect3D but when i'm working on one of my WIP models, they're high poly and makes life torture as it lags and jerks. I can use software/direct3D on small, low-poly stuff just fine.
Does anyone have the same problem? And/or know a fix. i thought it would be due to dx10 but all my games that use dx8 and 9 run fine, only max is suffering.
Hi RoCkBiGdAvE, i would be looking more towards a number of things:
1. Vista is not production/retail code as of yet and as such will have code optimized for debug info and reports so as it monitors high useage apps like max then there will be a drop off in performance.
2. Have you installed Vista happy graphics card drivers and not just the dx10 ones provided
3. Vista is a very hungry resource eater, do you have sufficent resources, swap space, memory etc.
Autodesk have made many improvements to speed up very dramatically the viewport performance in Max 9 using DirectX. The handling of DirectX under Vista opens up more new avenues.
You really need to subscribe or update your Max.
Getting Max 7 working in Vista is not on their to do list.

Yes I do have the proper drivers, their the RC1 ones from the ATi site. The only thing that i think hardware wise thats an issue is that I only have 1Gb of DDR400 RAM. But then again running BF2, in total only about 6 - 700mb of RAM is being used, when max is running (usualy acompanied by iTunes and Firefox), its pushing about the same, and i have 23Gb free on my main HDD so i think im ok, but not sure.

Well the specs sound ok, so i would be more tempted with the debug routines in vista being the bottleneck, there should be a vista newsgroup or forum that you could ask, there would probably be a greater response even if not directly max related
There are no dx10 cards out yet. I think it has something to do with the way Vista handles the older versions of dx. I tihnk max7 can choose between 8.1 or 9, my guess 9 should be more compatible than 8.1 in Vista.
However I use OpenGL and max works fine, haven't tried vista but give OpenGL a go. Try turning off your other graphics cards options like AA and AF as they may be having an effect as well.
I've got vista inmstalled on another drive, I might try get max workign on it and get back to you if I do.
Just letting you know I get the same problem on Vista RC1. It's got to be something to do with the directx implementation, probably too old to work properly in Vista, or it could just be a RC1 glitch. I don;t have RC2 installed to test it out, but maybe you can have success with that.
I'm not sure why you're running Vista in the first place as your main OS. It really sucks and I can't see people upgrading from XP to Vista unless they have to. Apart from people that get it OEM on their pcs, most will use xp as it still offers great performance and compatibilty overall.
Im using Windows Vista RC1 too, unfortunately Microsoft capped the number of downloads on RC2 so you cant actually get it now unless you or your business is an MSDN subscriber. Although vista has DX10 implemented it still runs DX9 games and applications no problem. I have had max 8 running on vista no problem. However for some reason max 9 wouldnt even open but I am quite sure this was due to my trial expiring. Vista seems to run really well with max. And considering the machine i using vista on is a bit below par, thats quite something :P Vista rated my machine at 2.1, AMD Athlon XP2000+ 1024mb RAM and 6800GT but at the end of the day the processor makes a big difference.

Vista came out today and i was very tempted to buy it! BUt was talking to the guy in the shop n he said to go away make sure u can get all the drivers first and put them on cd. So i went home and started looking around the net for drivers for my graphics hard, found it very hard! In regards to Max, I am using Max 7 and could not find any info on whether it would or not. But I found a list of software which will run and what wont.

Max 9 was on the "Works, but with problems section". If Max 9 cant even run smoothly with Vista, then I dont think Max 7 has a chance! Which screws me over, I need Max for uni, and our uni only has max 7! Prob best just to leave moving to Vista until everything is ironed out! Mayb they mite change the way Direct X10 wrks so it offers full support for previous versions!
hey, i had the same problem in maya too, so i disabled the aero glass features and reverted to vista basic, nvr had a problem since, maybe you can try it out
install it on a different PC. I tried Vista out yesterday and its only run at 640x480. I highly siggest you wait and buy a pc with it already installed. Save yourself some trouble
