i use 3ds so the mergers haven't bothered me much but even i see this as being bad. you can gradually see the autodesk products being standardized. some maya has shown up in 3ds an vice versa... still, we need to have more diverse ownership because having distinct platforms offers unique benefits

a) xsi, maya and 3ds were never the same platform. they were used for different purposes and suited different artists. having them all in a quasi monopoly of the market (sorry to modo and c4d but that's what it is...) is going to slowly break down that line. in fact, they probably won't all survive

b) less competition amongst software manufacturers is a bad thing. competition encourages inovation. though i'm sure the autodesk people will continue to work hard, there still won't be the same pressure on them to compete for our loyalty.

im sure its not like the end of the world but it feels like it but like rodder said im sure autodesk is going slack off (hopefully)with their apps but still wheres the competition now?. And which company is autodesk going to buy next pixologic zbrush?

well put younglion. it's not the end of the world but it isn't good (sorry to everyone for my analysis, i spent the day reading an economics textbook). i have no idea what's next but something will happen...
