Showcase : Mackevision
Company: Mackevision Medien Design GmbH
Location: Sindelfingen, Germany Website: www.mackevision.com Showreels: General Showreel 2006 Automotive Showreel 2006 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Project: B-Class Presentation Automobilsalon Genf 2005 Client: Mercedes Benz Press Dept./Tradeshow Dept. Type: Tradeshow / Press Final Format: Full HD Software used: 3d Studio Max, Vray, Apple Shake Awards: US Film and Video Festival 2006 - Animation: Computer - Certificate for Creative Excellence Animago 2005 - Animation - Professional - Vehicles - Rank 1 Description: There were actually two spots produced. One for the Press Department (wich is the one that is shown here) and one for the Tradeshow Department (wich had similar contents but was less dynamic and a little slower). It´s pretty hard to tell how long it took us to do it, because there were several Projects completed at once. I think it was approximately 2 months for 10 ppl and 5 Projects. The models were converted from CAD models. Those days we didnt recieve the actual CAD data tho, but already tesselated models. They were mostly missing vertex normals and hence a LOT of work had to be put into fixing the models. For all closeups things had to be remodelled to allow for the needed level of detail. The shading is a combination of reflection maps, raytraced lightplanes and pointlights(no GI) and the experience how to use them and, of course, a lot of trial and error. For the interior shots we also used ambient occlusion. (Those days VRay didnt have VRayDirt. So Dimo created a custom one based on some raw sourcecode from the Vray developers). The rendertimes varied a lot (from a few minutes to 5-6 hours). An additional challenge were the matchcuts to and from the real footage. That was tracked using Maya life and manually adjusted. Internationale Wirtschaftsfilmtage 2006 - Messefilm, Events, Veranstaltungen - Prix Victoria Gold Description: Again i dont really remember how long it took us to do that spot. In this case the data provided was a very inaccurate Scan of a scale prototype, hence the car was completely modelled. Due to the little referencematerial (the car was built as a prototype while we were doing the spot) and the absence of proper Datasets it misses some detail. For the underwater part Dimo wrote a new implicit object plugin for Vray. In the end we had to do without as we got into the deadline trap :P More info on the still in development implicit plugin for Vray can be found on DIMO´s developer blog at http://dimo3d.blogspot.com/ Images: Movies: Full Spot low-res quicktime --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Project: Mercedes Benz R-Class Webspecial Client: Mercedes Benz Type: Webspecial (Movies + Configurator) Final Format: Software used: 3d Studio Max, Vray, Apple Shake Description: This project took quite a long time as there were a lot of clientside wishes and changes to implement (esp regarding the look of the cartoon backgrounds). The Backgrounds were quite a challenge as they had to both match the provided photos for the stills in between the movies and the moods done by the agency in illustrator. We did not do the programming of the page itself, only the CG stuff. So the Car configurator (both interior, exterior and loading space configurators) and the movies that connect the different presentation parts. As in the B-Class movies, the interior and exterior had to be rendered seperatly as polycounts were pretty high. Thanks a lot for all the nice words! As this is not meant to be a pure showcase you are of course allowed to ask whatever you want, tho i cant answer all questions as you sure understand. You can also visit the irc chan and catch me for some realtime chat, i´m trying to be there as much as possible (mostly evenings German time).
Regards, Thorsten |
